Ash & Iron features & changes

The September 9 Ash & Iron update increases the Seasonal Bonus Power cap from 450 to 550, making it possible for those who have grinded a ton to reliably get Tier 5 gear in the Portal. Thankfully, it also comes with some new content and not just a big number increase.

New 3-person activity in the Plaguelands & Exotic mission

The Plaguelands from Destiny 1's Cosmodrome will make a return in Ash & Iron in the form of a new 3-person activity, tentatively titled "Reclaim". There will also be a new Exotic mission. We haven't heard too much about either of these things since the Ash & Iron reveal several months ago, but will probably learn more a little closer to release.

It seems like the Plaguelands activity will be part of the Portal, as the TWID 8/21 mentions "a brand-new activity type called [REDACTED]" coming to Fireteam Ops in Ash & Iron. Interestingly, the new Exotic mission isn't listed as coming to Pinnacle Ops in that post, so it may be accessed through some other means.

Portal: new content & reward rebalancing

TWID 8/21 revealed both new content coming to the Portal and a pretty substantial rewards rebalancing.

Bad news first: Solo Ops are going to drop gear that's one power level lower than you get from Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, or Crucible Ops. Additionally, three shorter Pinnacle Ops will have fewer rewards chests (Whisper, Starcrossed, & Encore).

Good news: the Portal is getting a bunch of newly reprised content to add some variety:

  • Fireteam Ops gets Battleground: Behemoth and Battleground: Core, three Strikes (HyperNet Current, Insight Terminus, and Fallen SABER), three Expeditions from Season of Plunder (Nessus, Cosmodrome, Europa), and the Tomb of Elders from Episode: Revenant.
  • Pinnacle Ops gets two Exotic missions from the Exotic rotator (Presage & Avalon) and "three dungeon lairs," with details forthcoming on what that means.

The Portal is getting updates to a lot of the timers and changes to some of the Reward Multipliers for different modifiers.

The Portal Reward Multiplier will no longer be based on your equipped gear's Power, instead using the account-wide Best-in-Slot Power that everything else uses (thankfully, good lord what a bad idea that was).

There's also two planned changes after Ash & Iron but before Renegades: Onslaught, The Coil, and Tomb of Elders will move from Fireteam Ops to Pinnacle Ops; and Fireteam and Pinnacle Ops will both get a special solo player bonus.

Desert Perpetual: epic raid & reward rebalancing

The Desert Perpetual Raid is getting a new "epic raid" difficulty, which will get its own Contest Mode and hosted live stream at launch. Notably, they're trying to avoid some of the loadout-swapping meta of the last Contest Mode with a new Not Swap modifier, and enabling Featured Gear buffs.

Additionally, both the regular and epic raids are getting rebalanced loot:

  • Regular difficulty Desert Perpetual gear starts at Tier 2, and Epic starts at Tier 3, regardless of your Power level
  • Completing the Raids has a chance to drop gear that is up to +2 Tiers above your current Power level's associated Tier, and enabling feats increases this chance
  • A new reward is added for completing all encounters in the Raid
  • Once a week, you can earn an extra piece of gear per encounter in the Raid on standard difficulty, and an extra piece of gear per encounter on the Raid in epic difficulty (you can also just run epic difficulty twice). This drops at an upgraded tier based on number of active feats.
  • Completing the epic raid unlocks attuning to specific gear to increase its chance of dropping

Monument to Seasons Past

Ash & Iron brings an unexpected new feature: a way of getting rewards from past Season Passes & Reward Passes.

The new Monument to Seasons Past will contain an Archived Pass for past passes. You can access an Archived Pass if you owned the corresponding Sesaon/Reward Pass, or if you buy it for 600 Silver ($6).

If you previously earned the rewards for a given Pass but never picked them up, you should instantly have access to those rewards in the Archived Pass. Otherwise, you have to use a new currency, called Chronologs, to get rewards from the Archived Pass. Buying a Pass will grant 500 Chronologs, enough for "a handful" of items from the Archived Pass. The only other listed source of Chronologs is the Reward Pass.

I would be a little surprised if there's no other source of Chronologs, since it seems like spending all of your Chronologs from the current Reward Pass would discourage you from buying further Archived Passes.

Excess Chronologs can be spent at a materials exchange. Notably, you can get Synthweave Templates, Exotic Ciphers, Ascendant Alloys & Shards, and Deepsight Harmonizers from this exchange. This will be the first opportunity to get Deepsight Harmonizers since Edge of Fate launched.

Other planned changes

  • Power progression speed will be increased (TWID 8/7)
  • Kepler Mythic difficulty will be decreased to make it possible to solo (TWID 8/7)
  • Raid and dungeon difficulty will be adjusted down (TWID 8/7)
  • A tuning pass for Warlocks (TWID 8/14)

Known issues

Bungie maintains a list of known issues. This is a lengthy list that's worth a look if something doesn't seem to be working right, but some quick highlights (lowlights?):

  • Players attempting to unlock Guardian Rank 8 are unable to do so due to the Special Surge event preventing the "Complete an activity with a Famine modifier active" from being completed. Players will be able to continue progressing after the Special Surge event has ended on 8/26.
  • The Class armor stat is scaling in increments instead of per point.
  • The catalyst quest for Tommy's Matchbook "A Good Match" is unavailable from Banshee.
  • Players can get soft-locked in the Creation Solo Op after dying in the final boss room if they had previously attempted to enter through the left-hand doorway, which cannot be progressed through. Players can avoid this lock by making sure they enter the room directly through the right-hand door.
  • The Divine Fragmentation quest to acquire Divinity is not dropping for players.

Additional, unacknowledged/unconfirmed issues:

  • The Fireteam Op Battleground: Conduit can soft lock (Reddit)
  • The Dread variant of the Solo Op The Salt Mines seems to either soft lock or just take forever to allow progress (Reddit)
  • The Taken variant of the Solo Op The Salt Mines can soft lock on the second room or last boss (Reddit)
  • The Kell's Fall Pinnacle Op doesn't drop intrinsic upgrades for the Slayer's Fang, making them unobtainable.
  • The Barrow-Dyad Exotic weapon & its upgrades are not currently obtainable. This will probably return in a Pinnacle Op eventually.
