Legacy content FAQ

General
What is "legacy content"?
A lot of the content in Destiny 2 is considered "legacy content." This doesn't really mean "old content" as much as "content that isn't 'up to date' with current systems."
For example: missions in the Portal are old generally old missions from past years of Destiny 2, but they aren't considered legacy content, as they've been brought up to date with Armor 3.0, drop tiered gear, and are balanced around the current PvE systems in the game.
So the content that can be considered "legacy" is:
- All campaigns before Edge of Fate
- Raids & Dungeons before Edge of Fate
- Nightfall Strikes
- Gambit
- Lost Sectors (including Expert/Master Lost Sectors)
- Some activities that are part of Exotic Quests (e.g. individual Strikes)
- Patrol zones (Patrols, Public Events, resource gathering)
- Destination vendor reputation grinds (Devrim, Failsafe, Eris, Varkis, Fynch, Nimbus, Ghost)
- The Pale Heart's Pathfinder (unlocked after beating The Final Shape)
What's going on with the loot from this stuff?
When it comes to loot in legacy content:
- All armor dropped will be Armor 2.0, which you'll see as having a few points in all 6 stats. This is in contrast to the new Armor 3.0 loot you'll get from the Portal and the Edge of Fate campaign, which will only have 3 focused stats.
- Guns and armor will only drop at Tier 1, regardless of your Power level.
- The max Power level of loot dropped in this content is 200, the current soft cap. You can't get loot with a Seasonal Power Bonus.
Because of this, none of those activities are part of the main grind. There are still specific reasons to grind all of this content - legacy Raids and Dungeons still drop unique Exotic weapons, for example - but they're just separate from the main Power & loot grind.
That said, just because the loot is "bad" doesn't mean it's not worth getting: a lot of this content has specific loot pools for guns and armor you won't find elsewhere. For armor, it's worth getting to unlock stuff for cosmetics - like, Spire of the Watcher drops a cowboy hat, and while that cowboy hat might have terrible stats, it's still worth having a cowboy hat to use as a skin, you know? And a lot of Tier 1 Legendary weapons are still extremely capable and fun to use.
Does any of the legacy content require me to get to a specific Power level?
Nope! Everything here can be done at any Power level, and none of it gets any easier or harder based on your Power level.
I abandoned a quest that it turns out I want to do. Where can I find it?
The Tower has an "Abandoned Quests archive" hidden away next to the Postmaster. You can pick up pretty much any quest you've abandoned there.
What's up with Gambit?
Everyone's favorite(?) PvPvE mode has been neglected for years, but with the Edge of Fate, it's in its sorriest state yet. Unlike Crucible, which got brought into the Portal and drops Portal loot, Gambit's been left out in a legacy playlist, and is more irrelevant than ever. There's no rewards other than the Gambit loot pool that's been around for years, and no Power increases to be gained.
That said: people still play it, and you can still earn rewards like the Dredgen title if you really want. I like to think it'll get a revival in the next year or so just because throwing it into the Portal would be an easy win for Bungie (who never pass up an opportunity to go "look, we brought back the thing we got rid of!"). Heck, it's even lore-relevant right now.
Campaigns
Beyond Light: How do I fully unlock Stasis/do I need to do this "Born in Darkness" questline?
To unlock Stasis, you just need to (a) beat the main Beyond Light campaign (the quest literally called "Beyond Light") and (b) buy Stasis aspects, fragments, and grenades from the Exo Stranger using Glimmer. That's it.
You will get a quest called Born in Darkness upon beating the campaign, which will, confusingly, tell you that completing it will unlock Stasis aspects, but also say that you don't need to do the quest to unlock Stasis aspects anymore. I'd like to say Born in Darkness is worth doing to spend some more time on Europa and finish the Exo Stranger's storyline. Problem is, it's quite grindy, and takes you through not just Gambit (which already has a low player count these days) but Nightfall Strikes, which you may really have trouble matchmaking for. Maybe pick it up and put it in your backlog.
What are these Upgrade Modules I keep getting from campaign chests for?
Nothing, now! They used to be a resource you had to use to infuse your gear to higher Power levels, but are no longer used. The campaign chests dropped them so returning players could get their old gear up to the new Power level in the campaign (since it used to increase with each expansion). You can discard those in your inventory as soon as you pick them up. Hopefully some day Bungie gets around to removing them.
Should I do the Legendary difficulty for Witch Queen/Lightfall/The Final Shape?
Give it a shot! If you have trouble, you can set the difficulty back down to normal when launching the campaign missions.
My experience with playing those campaigns on Legendary since Edge of Fate launched is that they are significantly easier than when they were first released (I say as someone who did not manage to beat them at the time). However, they do require you to think a bit about your build, particularly to juice up self-healing/damage mitigation skills and your Weapons stat to keep yourself alive and keep fights short. If you're running around with legacy armor and low stats and not thinking too much about your build, you might want to stick to Normal.
Really, the hardest thing about doing these missions on Legendary is the lack of radar, since it makes it harder to figure out where to go next. Just remember that if you pull up your Ghost it should always show you an indicator of where to go.
Lightfall: These quests tell me my Power level is too low, do I need to worry about that?
Nope. When Lightfall launched, it went kind of hard on the Power requirements for the campaign missions, really encouraging you to do side quests before continuing the main quest, which is why those tooltips exist on that quest. Nowadays, the Power level in the Lightfall campaign is a flat offset from your current level (like every other campaign), so you can totally ignore that.
Lightfall: What's the fastest way to get Strand Meditations after I beat the campaign?
Work through the post-campaign Hall of Heroes quest until you unlock Partition. You can then grab a weekly bounty from Nimbus that will give you access to another run of Partition.
This was once a once-per-week activity, but no longer locks you out of the mission after the first time you run it, so you can run Partition multiple times in a row, getting 250 Strand Meditations each run. A little repetitive, but by far the fastest grind. Feel free to break up the repetition with Terminal Overload or activities in the Vex Incursion Zone, which also give Strand Medallions.
